Weather

Overall, the Western Cape climate is typically Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers. Near the coast, summer's temperature rise from a pleasant low of 15º C to a warm 27º C. Inland temperatures are on average 3-5º C higher.

Tip: The African sun can be harsh, so please make sure you apply sun block when you head outdoors, wear a cap, and drink lots of water!

Money

Our currency is the Rand, it features the Big Five, and our burgers are cheaper here than in the USA...

Water

Unfortunately the last few rainy seasons have yielded insufficient rain to catchment areas around the Western Cape, which means that water restrictions are on the cards. Be mindful of this and use water like a local - sparingly.

Getting Outdoors

The Western Cape is one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world with some of the best outdoor activities on offer, including a number of amazing hikes not far from the city and town centres. But please ensure you stay safe by adhering to the following safety tips:

If you are going hiking, we recommend the use of a qualified mountain guide should you wish to explore any of our mountains or nature reserves on foot. Contact local tourism office for a guide.

If you are going without a guide, make sure you take a map, keep to demarcated paths and do not go alone. Wear comfortable walking shoes and take along a hat and something warm as the weather can change suddenly in the mountains. Also take enough water, sunblock and a charged mobile phone with emergency numbers saved. Tell someone where you are going and when you should be expected back, and start heading back well before dark.

Get off the grid

Of course, sometimes all you need to do in the summer holidays is get completely off the grid. Don’t worry, we have you covered.
