To add even more flair to this diverse region, the Foodie Route now showcases a host of flavour sensations in the area. Jump in the car and travel the circular journey, created by West Coast Way, which includes 10 unique stops. Some of the highlights are the West Coast National Park with Geelbek Restaurant, Langebaan, Saldanha Bay, Jacobsbaai, Paternoster and Cape Columbine, St Helena Bay and Shelley Point, Velddrif, the West Coast Fossil Park, Hopefield and the Thali Thali Game Lodge.

Namaqua Wines

De Keldery at Namaqua Wines will send your taste buds down the traditional food lane. The best part is, you get to enjoy hearty flavours next to incredible scenery. Slow down and enjoy looking out over the vineyards and the Maskam Mountains, and let the selection of top wines in the tasting room take you on a journey of Namaqualand’s wine region. They have chocolate and biltong pairings and a special jelly tot and juice pairing for the kids!

Vygevallei Farmstall

As you cruise along the R27, look out for this charming farmstall. The good news is they’ve re-opened The Winehouse and you can now buy wine from their cellar and eight others from the area. The kids can stretch their legs in the large play area and feed the animals. This farmstall has a lot of heart, it also has delicious homemade breads, pies and a large variety of jams and chutneys. Perfect for padkos.

Hungry for a little history? Enjoy fantastic food amongst the Fynbos. Discover why freshly prepared dishes using locally sourced ingredients just taste better. Menus vary according to season and always include a selection of meats. See the ocean in the distance as you eat at the Rustic Restaurant and try out the wide selection of locally-produced wines, many of which are available for tasting. The vibe here is very much 'Local is Lekker' and once your tummy is full, take a guided tour for a glimpse into the life of the San - this includes a tractor ride and a visit to a replica traditional San village.

Groote Post

A hop, skip and a jump away from Darling is Groote Post and Hilda’s Kitchen. They source locally-grown ingredients and have an ever-changing menu designed to complement the outstanding range of Groote Post wines. Did you know? This is the only restaurant in South Africa that was nominated by Eat Out 2013 in both "Best Bistro" and "Best Country-Style" categories in the region. Groote Post Nature Walks are perfect for some outdoor family time (put that iPad away) and we can recommend the picnics in the warmer months. The farm also forms part of the famous Cape West Coast Spring Flower Route.
