On 2 February 2026, South Africa celebrates a remarkable milestone: 367 years of winemaking heritage. Since the first vines were planted in 1659, the country’s wine industry has grown into a global standard of excellence, bringing together vineyard workers, winemakers, sommeliers, marketers, and wine enthusiasts from around the world.
The Happy Birthday SA Wine campaign honours this rich history, celebrates the people behind every bottle, and highlights what makes South African wine and wine tourism experiences truly unique. From the vineyards to the tasting rooms, the industry thrives on a legacy of innovation, dedication, and passion.
Every year the SA Wine Harvest Commemorative Event kicks off the start of the wine harvest season.
The celebration continues 5 February 2026 at Groot Constantia Wine Estate, the nation’s oldest wine-producing farm. Under the theme “Celebrating the Journey of the South African Wine Harvest”, this black-tie evening will feature a gourmet dinner, live entertainment, and the official blessing of the new harvest.
This celebration also honours outstanding contributions across five pillars of the industry:
- 1659 Awards for visionary leadership
- Growth inclusivity
- wine advancement
- viticulture and viniculture innovation
- Wine Agri-workers.
This celebration is a tribute to the people, heritage, and innovation that have sustained South African wine for over three and a half centuries. It is a moment to honour the journey so far and to toast to the continued growth and global impact of the industry.
