In the heart of Paris, the wine world gathered to celebrate excellence — and for the second-year running, Johan Jordaan stood at the forefront. The Cellar Master of Spier Wine Farm has been named Master Chenin Blanc Winemaker at the prestigious Master Winemaker 100, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest Chenin Blanc producers globally.

Hailing from Stellenbosch, Johan’s achievement is more than personal recognition — it is a celebration of South Africa’s mastery of its heritage varietal. The Master Winemaker 100, now in its 13th year, is known for its rigorous blind judging by Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, and senior buyers. Wines are assessed purely on quality and style, without bias toward region or brand — making consecutive wins exceptionally rare.
At the heart of this success is the acclaimed Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc, crafted from certified old vines planted in the mid-1980s. His philosophy centres on soil regeneration, biodiversity, and long-term vineyard health — ensuring that each vine thrives naturally and expresses its true character.

Using a modular winemaking approach, Johan carefully manages small vineyard parcels individually before blending. This precision allows subtle differences in soil, slope, and season to shape each component, resulting in a Chenin Blanc of depth, balance, and authenticity.

Did you know...
Chenin Blanc became the most widely planted grape in the country and played a major role in early brandy and bulk wine production. Over time, quality-focused producers reimagined Chenin, highlighting old bush vines and terroir-driven expressions.

Today, South Africa is the largest producer of Chenin Blanc in the world, with notable regions including:

  • Stellenbosch
  • Swartland
  • Paarl

Modern South African Chenin ranges from fresh and mineral-driven to rich, textured, oak-aged styles.
