Tandem Skydive in Robertson 

If you’d like to experience skydiving in an area known for its frequent blue skies, a tandem jump is the ideal way to become acquainted with the thrilling and addictive sport.

Leap from 11,000ft (3,359m) strapped to one of Skydive Robertson’s experienced instructors. You’ll feel the wind rushing past your face as you hurtle towards the Earth at around 200km/h. After 40-seconds of freefall, the parachute will open and you’ll be able to take in the landscape at a more leisurely pace, with vineyards and the Breede River sprawled below. The gentle descent culminates in touch down on terra firma again, where you’ll most likely feel giddy from delight and from a good dose of adrenalin.

If the bug bites, Skydive Robertson offers training courses that range from ‘first time jump’ to ‘accelerated freefall’.

Rock Climb in Montague

The folded sandstone mountains of Kogmanskloof, where the Montagu Pass weaves through the Langeberg mountains, provides hundreds of sport climbing routes which cater for all levels of mountaineers. In addition to these routes, there area growing number of single- and multi-pitch trad routes.

Seasoned climbers may want to try their hand Badkloof or The Steeple, if they want a more vertical climb. Climbs with intriguing names like Legoland and The Farm on 62 are also popular choices. Novices (or any level of climber) can opt to do a guided climb with an experienced local.

Montagu Climbing and Montague Outdoor Adventures offer guided climbs and abseiling are able to provide information about routes, such as Bosch Kloof, which require permits.

4x4 Trails near Worcester

If you’d like to put your 4x4 vehicle to the test, Tierkloof offers 12km of 4x4 trails including a five-kilometre climb up the mountain where you have to navigate between huge boulders. There are sections for both beginners and experienced 4x4 drivers and the reward for your effort, besides overcoming the various obstacles, is the panoramic vista at the viewpoint which overlooks the Brandvlei Dam.

If you’re not confident in your ability to make use of a vehicle’s four-wheel-drive capabilities, you can book an off-road driving course through the General Tire (GT) Adventure Academy at Klipbokkop Mountain Reserve, near Worcester. You’ll be guided on how best to climb up and reverse down steep inclines and after deflating your tyres to the correct pressure for sand driving, you’ll get to have some fun navigating the winding paths through the mini-dunes at the reserve.

Fly Fish near Rawsonville

Dwarsberg Trout Hideaway lies in the Stettynskloof Valley and is a magnificently scenic spot tucked away beneath steep mountain peaks, about twenty minutes drive from Rawsonville. Here you can pitch a tent on the lawn next to the Holsloot River, book a stay in the cottages, or the new pods, and enjoy some fly fishing. The river cuts through the surrounding peaks allowing it to retain its cool temperature during the warmer summer months, creating the ideal habitat for trout to thrive in.

The sport of fly fishing has been described as ‘the complentative man’s recreation’ and trout hideaway offers the ideal environment for both trout fishing and unwinding.

If you have yet to try your hand at fly fishing and are keen to give it a go, Upstream Flyfishing offers guided fly fishing trips to the Limietberg Nature Reserve (near Wellington) and caters for beginners and experienced fisherfolk.

Unique Tractor Ride near Montague

Protea Farm has been running tractor rides that pull a cart full of people to the top of the Langeberg mountains, since 1985. The popular Montague attraction will have you chugging up steep, gravel roads with views of the Koo Valley that wind to the top of the mountain. When you stop at the uppermost point of the ride (1500m above sea level), you’ll be able to look down over the Robertson Valley on the other side of the peaks and on a clear day you can see all the way to McGregor.

After a brief stop at the mountain hut with time to take photos and enjoy the view, you’ll head back, with the option of a hot potjiekos lunch waiting for you at the bottom.

The tractor rides take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays and booking is recommended.
