The Robertson Show is celebrating its 125th birthday this year.
The show originated as an agriculture show for the broader communities of
Montague, Ashton, Roberton, Bonnievale and McGregor, but over the last
number of years focused almost exclusively on show horses.
Bigger agricultural shows like Nampo (and recently Nampo Cape in
Bredasdorp) attract farmers from all over and offers complete and extensive
ranges of farm equipment, so that it has become difficult to get the attention
of the farming community through exhibitions with a limited display of goods.
As such, the number of feet through the gates has gradually declined over
the last ten years.
The Robertson Show is the second biggest open air horse show in South
Africa.
Annually more than 400 horses are on show here in Robertson, and it is then
also the occasion of the WP Saalperd, WP Swart Trekperd and SA Ryperd
Championships.
As such the Robertson Show does have its place in the market, although the
stature of the event in the eyes of the public has diminished.
