Purpose of the position:
The Portfolio Manager: FDI – Services, Life Sciences & Health is to promote and facilitate investment into the Western Cape in the Services and Life Sciences & Health sectors. This role is focused on foreign direct investment (FDI). It involves identifying new business opportunities, working with key stakeholders, facilitating investments into the Western Cape and contributing to strategic efforts to position the Western Cape as a leading regional economy.
Requirements:
- A 3-year degree or equivalent qualification in Business Sciences, Economics, Development Studies, or related field.
- A relevant postgraduate degree would be advantageous.
- 3–5 years’ experience in investment promotion, business development, services and/or life sciences and health sectors, or related industries.
- Understanding and knowledge of the following key sectors in the Western Cape economy, including:
- Services (including Tech, Financial services, ICT, E-commerce, Creative Industries
- Life Sciences & Health (including Biotech, Digital Health, Pharmaceuticals, Medical devices, Healthcare Services)
- Preference will be given to candidates with a strong knowledge of the Services sector, particularly the Tech sector (including the ecosystem in South Africa and the Western Cape specifically), early-stage investment, as well as ICT
- A strong understanding of the South African economy, spanning companies from start-up to JSE-listed businesses; key financiers within the different sectors and important stakeholders and role-players that enable investment
- Be able to work with Senior Management (MD/CEO/CFO/Boards etc.) of various entities from listed to non-listed companies.
- Financial management in the context of the PFMA and knowledge of the policy environment (economic policy, industry structure and dynamics) would be advantageous
- Proven track record in business development and client management
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point)
- Be able to travel domestically and internationally, sometimes on short notice
- A valid Code B driver’s license and passport.

Duties:
- Promote foreign direct investment into the Western Cape
- Provide facilitation services to investors in order to land fixed investments into the Western Cape
- Identify and build relationships with key intermediaries (e.g. banks, consulting companies, law firms, event organisers, Chambers of commerce, business associations, etc) in order to help with both the promotion and facilitation work
- Co-develop materials (pitch decks, marketing materials and research pieces) to promote the Western Cape economy
- Organise and coordinate investor/stakeholder networking events and facilitate Wesgro’s participation in conferences or events hosted in South Africa and internationally
- Provide strategic direction in task teams that are working to improve Wesgro’s investment promotion impact
- Host and present to inward business missions and delegations
- Plan, coordinate and embark on outward investment promotion missions
- Work closely with key units internally at Wesgro to support cross-collaboration in client business support
The successful candidate will report to the Senior Portfolio Manager: FDI
