Groote Post is one of the oldest estates in the country. It was founded in 1808 as an enormous farm on the Cape West Coast that largely supplied fruit, vegetables and livestock to the Dutch East India Company. It has been a colonial outpost, agricultural experiment and a manor home for many families over the past two centuries.

Today the Groote Post estate is owned by the Pentz family who have kept many of the agricultural and horticultural traditions from the farm’s past to create its award-winning wines.

Why should you visit Groote Post? Besides to see an incredible piece of South African history in the land and manor house, you can taste delicious wines and visit the restaurant for a decadent lunch.

Groote Post wines

Groote Post creates a large selection of vintages. Most wines are available to buy from local liquor stores, however, if you’re looking for the reserve wines you can either purchase online, or at the estate.

Wine tastings are held daily from 10am to 4pm, no booking required. The Groote Post Cellar looks out on the beautiful Klawer Valley and the restored Cape Dutch Klawer Valley and homestead. At the cellar, also look out for the imposing slave bell, signalling back to the estate’s former life under colonial rule. The bell is also depicted on all Groote Post wine labels.

Hilda’s Kitchen restaurant

Hildagonda Duckitt (also known as Hilda) grew up on the homestead after her parents purchased the estate in 1836. Hilda later became a renowned South African author known for her works "Hilda's 'Where Is It?' of Recipes" and "Hilda's Diary of Cape Housekeeping".

Hilda’s Kitchen restaurant is a homage to the original Hilda who crafted her cooking and writing skills on the estate.

The restaurant is open for lunch only, Wednesday to Sunday. Fresh and local produce and ingredients are used to create meals that compliment Groote Post wines.

If a sit-down meal is not what you’re after, book one of Hilda’s picnic platters a few days before your trip. This way you can lounge on the lawns and take in the beautiful surrounding views.
