Gansbaai has long been known for its Great White population, with local and international visitors arriving in the small coastal Oveberg town to see these incredible creatures up close. The shark cage diving industry is still thriving in the town, but the fat bike tours add an exciting new prospect to adventure-loving visitors.

Of course, a tour is only as good as its guide, and Dave‘s enthusiasm for the job at hand is unrivalled. You get the feeling he would be doing this whether you were here or not and his love of the area and the bikes he explores it on is infectious. Even if you’re a little wary going into the big drop-offs initially, after Dave gets to egging you on, you will be blasting downhill in no time at all.

And if you fall, don’t worry, it’s only sand… most of it is soft.

The great thing about fat bikes is you don’t need much in the way of technical skills, with the heavy duty tyres taking most of the skill factor out of it. The bikes are easy to manoeuvre and can take a lot of impact, meaning you will barrel over most obstacles that get in your way. Even better, apart from a short, slightly technical section, the dunes don’t present much in the way of technical riding.

Fitness? To be honest, apart from a couple of smallish climbs, most of the Sand Dunes tour is downhill or flat, meaning just about anybody can take part, even those with limited fitness levels.

Other tours offered are the Hermanus Beach Trail, the DeKelders – Hermanus Beach Trail and for the fitter riders, The EPIC, which can last up to five hours.
