The Western Cape is mad for mountain biking and trail running with some of the best trails the world has to offer. The Jakhals MTB and Trail RunChallenge is an awesome event dedicated to both disciplines and offers something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Offering MTB distances of 22km,42km and 62km, and an 8km trail run along the foothills of the beautiful Outeniqua Mountains, you will be spoilt for choice. Based in the Garden Route,there is so much on offer and even for those not riding, there is plenty to do. Make a weekend of it with this fantastic itinerary.
Day 1 – Saturday, 23 August
Experience: Guided MTB with Paradise Adventures
The Garden Route is MTB mecca and there are a number of guided MTB rides that can be done on various trails around the Garden Route. These are catered to your skill and fitness level.
Eat: Herold Wines
Experience a cellar tour to learn how Herold Wines are made then enjoy something delicious from the kitchen. Cheese platters, toasted sandwiches, quiche, pancakes and teas are all on offer.
Day 2 – Sunday, 24 August
Experience: Eden e-Bike Adventure Tours
Experience the Map of Africa tour with Eden e-Bike Adventure Tours. This adventure tour starts and ends at the picturesque Woodlands Farm just a few minutes from George on the Seven Passes road towards Knysna. It is suitable for all fitness levels and is a great way to see the farm and the beautiful surrounds with breath-taking vistas of the Kaaimans River. The trail meanders through open grassland and twisty descents and inclines through the pine forest. Bring your camera to take pictures of the beautiful fauna and flora and wildlife, and you may be lucky enough to spot a leopard or two.
Experience: Groeneweide Hiking Trail
Groeneweide. It’s just what the name says: it’s a lush and green jungle. It’s soothing to the eye and the undergrowth is quite thick compared to other parts in the Garden Route forests. The long loop also has some fynbos and grassland sections. Lookout for some amazing fauna and flora.
Monet’s Restaurant offers a café bistro atmosphere overlooking the rolling greens of the Outeniqua golf course with the beautiful Outeniqua Mountains as the backdrop.
