Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme:

South Africa’s premier one-day mountain bike race will stage its 13th edition in 2019. For the very brave there is the Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme MTB Challenge – a mammoth 121km route, with a lung-busting 2900m vertical ascent! For those looking for a slightly less extreme challenge, take on the Attakwas Mini, 52km event with 1100m vertical ascent. This is the race to do if you want to test mind, body and machine!

Red Bull King of the Air Kitesurfing Competition:

Where: Cape Town, Blouberg

Date: 26 January – 10 February 2019

From 27 January to 10 February, the world’s best kite surfers will descend on Cape Town to compete in the Red Bull King of the Air Kitesurfing competition. The who’s who of the sport will go head-to-head to see who will claim the coveted King of the Air title, with the infamous ‘Cape Doctor’ sure to give the a helping hand with wind speeds hitting over 30 knots .

Fedhealth Xterra:

The Fedhealth XTERRA Grabouw is the biggest XTERRA event in the world – an off-road triathlon known for its gruelling course. With over 2000 athletes battling it out for the coveted title of South African Champion, the event is always a thrilling affair with some of the biggest names in the sport taking part. There are also numerous age group qualification slots up for grabs for the XTERRA World Championship held annually in October in Hawaii.

Cape Town Cycle Tour:

The world’s largest timed cycle race, the Cape Cycle Tour is the jewel in the crown for cycling in the Mother City and easily one of South Africa’s largest – and most popular – sporting events. Held every year in March, the route is 109km long and one of the most beautiful in the world, circling the Cape Peninsula with the start and the finish in the shadow of the iconic Table Mountain. Be sure to explore the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo before the race as it has become almost as popular as the race itself with all sorts of cycling goodies to browse!

ABSA Cape Epic:

Date: 17 – 24 March 2019

An iconic stage-racing event, the Absa Cape Epic has become one of mountain biking’s biggest draws globally. The largest full-service mountain bike stage race in the world, the Cape Epic covers 700kms of the Western Cape region in South Africa. The route changes significantly each year and lures amateur and professional cyclists from across the globe to test their mettle. In 2015, 55 countries were represented at the race, which kicked off with a prologue on the slopes of Table Mountain and culminated in the Grand Finale finish at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville.

Masgcor Cederberg 100 Miler:

The Masgcor Cederberg 100 Miler is the ultimate endurance mountain bike event. The race takes place on 6 – 7 April 2019, starting at Clanwilliam and finishing at Kaleo Manor in the Bokkeveld. The Cederberg 100 Miler consists of a one-day Ultra marathon or a two-day stage race through the Cederberg – one of the most beautiful regions in the Western Cape.

Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon:

Date: 19- 20 April 2019

Every Easter Weekend, more than 10 000 runners descend on Cape Town to take on the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon – a 56km ultra and “the world’s most beautiful marathon”. Don’t believe the hype? You should, because the route makes its way around the Cape Peninsula, incorporating both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and some of the most jaw-dropping scenery the Cape has to offer. The Two Oceans Half Marathon is also incredibly popular with 15 000 runners taking part, and while the shorter distance doesn’t quite boast the same views, it is still easy on the eyes.

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon:

Flat, fast and ideal for both elite and amateur runners, the Cape Town Marathon takes over the Mother City’s streets on the morning of 5 September. Whether you are looking to take part or just support, this fantastic race is worth getting up early for. Apart from the 42.2km race, the event includes the 10km Peace Run/Walk, the Cape Town Peace Trail Runs (12km and 22km) and a community fun run.
