Take your tastebuds on an extensive craft beverage-tasting and gastronomic adventure in the Overberg. The Big 5 Taste Safari was created to encourage tourism in the Hermanus, Stanford and Botriver areas. It’s also a chance for visitors to enjoy good local food, wines, gins, liqueurs and beers.

What’s special about the Big 5 Taste Safari?

Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that you won’t be tasting elephant, lion, leopard, rhino or buffalo while on your culinary safari with the company! What you will be doing, however, is tasting delicious wine and food while learning about the Overberg region.

A 15-seater sightseeing bus will be your wine-tasting chariot of choice on the day of your tour. Setting off in the morning, the bus takes visitors from one location to another and passes some of the most spectacular views the Cape has to offer. Waves kissing the shoreline, hills lined with harvest-ready grapes and bustling urban areas will be in your view as the bus rolls by.

Big 5 Taste Safari routes on offer

Currently, there are three tours that you can try. Each focuses on providing visitors with a different experience. Here is a snapshot of what you can expect:

Hermanus: besides wine-tasting your way through Hermanus, you can expect up to three beach stops during the drive, a craft beer-and-food pairing, and cocktails towards the end of the day. It’s worth mentioning that, in 2019, Hermanus was also named a Unesco City of Gastronomy! So enjoy the culinary adventure.

Stanford: taste local cheese, enjoy a craft gin or relax with a cold beer at one of the many stops on the Stanford route. A sweet point of the trip is learning about the production of honey, and the chance to taste the honey, too. The day ends with lunch by a lake, and then a scenic drive back to the starting point.

Botriver: beer tasting, cheese, preserve and roosterkoek tasting and, of course, a wine tasting, are all part of the Botriver experience. Unlike the previous two tours, you can expect to also try olive oil and grappas at one of the stops.
